The Ask.

Do a deep dive on fashion trends in womenswear and menswear from the 1960s to the 1980s.

The Process.

Research, research, and more research

The first step in this process was to figure out what these decades consisted of, and the decade that spoke to me in particular was the 1960s. I had to determine three trends for women’s daywear, women’s nightwear, menswear, and accessories in the 1960s. Not only was it important to identify these trends, but also it was necessary to understand the pivotal events and the culture of the decade as a whole in order to piece together how these trends fall into line during that particular time period.

Why the 1960s?

As I continued my research, the trends during the 1960s resonated with me because it reminded me of old Bollywood movies I used to watch when I was a kid. Bollywood during the 1970s was an iconic era, and it is clear to see that they were inspired by the west. The 60s color palette went hand in hand with the aesthetic of Bollywood movies because the 60s encompassed fun patterns and prints and bright colors. This fit right in with the colorful culture of India. It was nostalgic for me to see all these images in my research and then compare them back to the movies I’ve seen.

The Hunt for Images

A key factor for this project was finding authentic images to represent the trends of the time. Authentic meaning the pictures we were including had to be from that time, or it was a picture of a piece that was made during the 60s. It was important to gather images from different sources because there should be a variety in what is being presented. To create diversity among my slide deck, I included images from the Met Museum, which has numerous collections of clothing and accessories from different periods of times. In addition, I used Pinterest for drawings and a website that specialized in advertisements from past decades.

Bringing it all Together

After the slide deck was assembled, I put all the pieces together. An extra step in this part was to add captions to each picture to explain the trend being shown and what it represented. In addition, before presenting the trends, I had to write a summary of the 1960s in order to give an overview of what times were like during the decade.

Time for Creativity

After researching and collecting images, I needed somewhere to display this information, so it was time to design a slide deck. Since the 60s were a groovy and crazy colorful decade, I wanted the design of these slides to be representative of that. This was my favorite part, because I love a pop of color, believe it or not. There’s an array of oranges, yellows, pinks, greens, and lots of organic lines and shapes throughout the presentation.
